How often have you heard advice like, “Follow your heart,” “Trust your feelings,” or “Go with what feels right”? It sounds comforting, even empowering—but Jeremiah warns us of the danger. Feelings can mislead, and desires can be selfish or short-sighted. Instead of blindly following our hearts, we’re called to be transformed by God’s Word so that our desires align with His. Psalm 37, written by a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14), urges us to delight ourselves in the LORD—then He will shape our desires and give us what truly satisfies. It’s not wrong to have deep desires, but they must be God-shaped desires, born out of a life submitted to Him. Rather than trusting in ourselves, let’s seek to become men and women after God’s own heart and follow Him wholeheartedly.
