Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. (1 Corinthians 16:13)

Daily reading: Isaiah 54

In Scripture, neither soldiers nor priests are pictured as sitting. Soldiers in God’s army are called to ‘stand’ against the devil’s schemes—standing firm, equipped with the full armour of God (Ephesians 6:11–14). Similarly, priests in the Old Testament stood daily to serve, offering repeated sacrifices. In the Tabernacle there was only one seat—the mercy seat—highlighting that the priest’s work was never finished (Hebrews 10:11). Service to God, whether in spiritual battle or priestly ministry, requires alertness, readiness and perseverance. Paul, as both a soldier and priest of the gospel, declared, I stand to this day testifying, pointing to a life of active, enduring witness (Acts 26:22). There’s no place for idleness in the Christian life. Whether we are engaging the enemy or interceding before God, we are called to stand—faithful, steadfast and empowered by the help God provides. Service in Christ’s name always demands our full commitment, not our comfort or convenience.
