Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation … (1 Peter 2:2–3)
Daily reading: 2 Samuel 22:1-25
The Christian life doesn’t drift into maturity—it takes deliberate effort. Peter outlines two clear steps in 1 Peter 2. First, we must put away harmful attitudes like malice (verse 1). Malice isn’t just overt hostility; it’s the slow-burning bitterness we store deep down, waiting for a moment to erupt. It’s spiritually toxic and completely incompatible with the grace we’ve received in Christ. Second, we’re called to long for the pure milk of God’s Word, just as a newborn baby cries out for nourishment. That baby doesn’t ask politely—it’s urgent, loud and focused. That’s the kind of hunger we’re meant to have for God’s truth. Like milk isn’t just a ‘nice-to-have’ for a baby, scripture isn’t optional for spiritual growth—it’s the essential foundation. Without it, our faith stalls. With it, we’re shaped, renewed and strengthened day by day in Christ. So let’s not dabble in discipleship—let’s grow. Drop what harms, and drink deeply from what’s healthy.
